Clash of the Titans’: When Titans Clash

It was a time, long ago, of myths and monsters, when gods walked among men, a royal wedding was in its final planning stages and MTV was just weeks away from making its debut. It was the summer of 1981 when the original “Clash of the Titans,” a sword-and-sandals adventure, arrived in theaters, helping to introduce a generation of moviegoers raised on Darth Vader and R2-D2 to the heroic Perseus, the evil Calibos and a pantheon of temperamental, toga-chasing Greek gods.
In the hallowed tradition of Hollywood doing everything all over again, Hollywood is doing it all over again. A remade version of “Clash of the Titans” opened on Friday, with an estimated $70 million budget and an eye-popping, Medusa-head-coming-at-you 3-D treatment (and which Manohla Dargis reviews here).
